Why it matters

Profit margins drive the raise. Adjusted EBITDA was $215.4 million, a 23.8% margin against 22.9% a year earlier. Gross margin widened to 42.4% from 39.9%. Power Transmission's adjusted EBITDA margin rose to 24.5% from 22.9%, while Fluid Power's slipped to 22.8% from 22.9%.

The raise itself is small. OptimistFi calculates that the adjusted EBITDA midpoint moved to $816 million from $815 million. The adjusted EPS midpoint rose $0.03, to $1.69.

OptimistFi has argued that Gates Industrial turns its installed base into price-resilient aftermarket revenue and strong cash conversion. Chief Executive Ivo Jurek said Industrial Aftermarket growth accelerated from the prior quarter, which supports that view.

Cash is the caveat. Net cash from operating activities fell to $170.0 million for the nine months from $208.3 million a year earlier. Receivables absorbed $144.5 million of cash and inventories $118.0 million, against $71.4 million and $6.7 million a year earlier. Debt repayments fell to $9.4 million from $114.1 million. Share repurchases rose to $96.1 million from $13.0 million.

What's next

Gates Industrial's next quarterly report will update the full-year guidance ranges and operating cash flow. Cash moving toward the 90%+ free cash flow conversion guidance would strengthen the case. Continued weakness in operating cash would weaken it.
