What happened
Algonquin Power Utilities Corp. (NYSE: AQN) completed the sale of its Chilean water utility holding on Oct. 30 for cash proceeds of approximately $126.4 million.
Algonquin may receive up to $1.5 million more through a contingent earnout. Payment depends on certain regulatory and other contractual conditions, so the amount is a ceiling, not cash in hand.
The unit sold was Liberty Holdings Chile SpA, called Suralis Holdco in the filing. It indirectly held Algonquin's approximately 64% interest in Suralis S.A. Algonquin signed the sale agreement on Aug. 28 and moved the unit to held for sale in the third quarter. The cash flow statement shows an $8.3 million loss from that move.

What the sale takes off the books
Until the close, Algonquin's Regulated Services Group held an interest in a water and wastewater utility system in Chile. The filing says every Algonquin utility except Suralis operates under cost-of-service regulation.
Algonquin does not treat the sale as a discontinued operation. The filing says the sale is not a strategic shift with a major effect on operations and financial results.
The cash arrives against $564.0 million of commercial paper, up from $337.0 million at Dec. 31, 2025. Liquidity available under credit facilities fell to $1.19 billion at Sept. 30 from $1.47 billion at year-end 2025. Principal payments due in the next year total $984.7 million, a figure that excludes the unit being sold.

Third-quarter results behind the sale
Revenue rose 10.3% to $642.5 million from $582.7 million in the third quarter of 2025. Regulated electricity distribution revenue was $417.8 million, up from $360.8 million. The earnings presentation cites weather and other revenue adjustments of $24.5 million against the same period in 2025. Of that, $13.3 million came from approved rates and other items across several other utility systems and $11.2 million from favorable weather.
Two Empire Electric rate decisions took effect in the quarter. Missouri rates began Aug. 3 under a $97.0 million settlement phased in over three years. Kansas rates began Aug. 1 under an approximately $8.8 million adjustment phased in over two years.
Operating income climbed 7.9% to $161.6 million from $149.7 million. Below that line, costs grew. Interest expense rose to $76.6 million from $71.7 million, and other net losses widened to $33.7 million from $11.3 million. Earnings from continuing operations fell 28.1% to $42.2 million from $58.7 million.
Net earnings rose to $41.6 million from $23.9 million, and net earnings per share climbed from $0.05. The jump reflects a smaller loss from discontinued operations: $0.6 million, against $34.8 million a year earlier. Earnings per share from continuing operations slipped to $0.07 from $0.09.
Over nine months, earnings from continuing operations were $99.0 million against $135.6 million, and other net losses reached $83.2 million against $25.5 million. Algonquin recorded a $17.2 million charge in other net losses in the second quarter, based on the proposed decision related to the Mountain View Fire.
Why it matters
OptimistFi has argued that Algonquin creates value by turning predictable utility cash flow into accretive investments while keeping leverage in check. The Chile exit and the quarter's earnings point in different directions for that view.
By OptimistFi's calculation, the proceeds equal 22.4% of the commercial paper outstanding on Sept. 30. The cash would cover less than a quarter of that short-term borrowing. It helps, but it does not change the debt picture alone.
Reinvestment is running ahead of internal cash. Operating cash flow was $187.8 million in the quarter against $98.6 million a year earlier. Additions to property, plant and equipment were $214.5 million against $150.8 million. Spending outran operating cash by $26.7 million.
The caveat is earnings quality. Earnings from continuing operations are falling even as revenue grows. The held-for-sale loss and the Mountain View charge show one-time items still reaching results. The earnout is capped and conditional. OptimistFi reads the event as mixed for the case.
What's next
Algonquin's next quarterly report, covering the fourth quarter and full year 2026, will be the first to include the Oct. 30 close. A recovery in earnings from continuing operations from the third-quarter decline would support the case.
A lower commercial paper balance than the Sept. 30 level would also help, as would payment of any part of the earnout. Another quarter of widening other net losses would weaken the case.
