Linde’s adjusted profit climbs, but reported EPS falls 11% (NASDAQ: LIN)

What happened

Linde plc (NASDAQ: LIN) reported third-quarter adjusted earnings per share of $4.59, up 9%. Reported diluted EPS fell 11% to $3.66.

The gap exists because adjusted figures leave out Linde AG purchase accounting impacts and cost reduction program and other charges. Reported net income fell 12%. Adjusted net income rose 7% to $2.12 billion.

Linde reported the results Oct. 29. Sales for the quarter ended Sept. 30 were $9.4 billion, up 9%, including a 1% boost from currency. Adjusted operating profit rose 8% to $2.76 billion, a 29.4% adjusted operating margin.

Where the growth came from

Underlying sales rose 5%, from 3% price attainment and 2% volumes. Linde pointed mainly to the electronics, chemicals energy and manufacturing end markets.

The Americas grew fastest. Sales rose 11% to $3.60 billion, and underlying sales rose 9% on 6% higher pricing and 3% higher volumes. Operating profit of $1.26 billion was 35.1% of sales, 50 basis points above the prior year.

APAC sales rose 12% to $1.95 billion. Underlying sales rose 8% on 5% volumes and 3% pricing, helped by project start-ups. Its operating margin of 27.4% was 70 basis points below the prior year, or 40 basis points below when cost pass-through is excluded.

EMEA sales rose 7% to $2.33 billion, with underlying sales up 3%. Operating profit of $817 million was 35.1% of sales. That was 80 basis points below the prior year and flat when cost pass-through is excluded.

Linde Engineering sales rose 12% to $582 million. Operating profit was $107 million, or 18.4% of sales. Order intake was $499 million, and third-party sale of equipment backlog stood at $2.9 billion.

Cash flow, buybacks and guidance

Operating cash flow rose 8% to $3.17 billion. After capital expenditures of $1.39 billion, free cash flow was $1.78 billion. Linde returned $1.69 billion to shareholders through dividends and stock repurchases, net of issuances.

For the full year, Linde expects adjusted diluted EPS of $17.82 to $17.92, up 8% to 9% with a 2% currency boost. It expects capital expenditures of $5.5 billion to $6.0 billion for growth and maintenance, including the $7.9 billion contractual sale of gas project backlog.

Total project backlog stands at $11 billion. CEO Sanjiv Lamba said customer proposal activity, particularly in electronics, supports confidence in continued backlog growth.

Why it matters

OptimistFi has argued that Linde turns long-term contracts and onsite assets into predictable cash flow and growing operating profit. The quarter fits that view on cash, since operating cash flow and adjusted operating profit grew at the same pace.

The reported side is weaker. By OptimistFi's calculation, adjusted operating profit ran $613 million above reported operating profit of $2.15 billion. Adjusted EPS ran $0.93 above reported EPS. Reported operating margin was 22.9%, well below the adjusted margin.

Holders leaning on the case should note that the improvement sits mostly in adjusted measures. Reported net income and diluted EPS both fell. Linde also said operating margin was 30 basis points lower than a year earlier, but flat when cost pass-through is excluded.

OptimistFi reads the quarter as mixed. Cash generation supports the case. The gap between adjusted and reported earnings leaves the profit side less clear.

What's next

Fourth-quarter 2026 results are the next test. Linde expects adjusted diluted EPS of $4.40 to $4.50, up 5% to 7% from the prior-year quarter, with no expected currency impact.

A result inside that range would match guidance. Reported EPS that again falls while adjusted EPS rises would keep the question over earnings quality open.
