Why it matters

OptimistFi's case is that BV Financial works if its thrift can fund relationship loans cheaply, preserve credit quality and turn excess capital into per-share value. Noninterest-bearing deposits increased $1.1 million, or 0.8%, to $139.5 million. Book value per common share rose to $21.95 from $19.95. The allowance for credit losses on loans was $6.3 million, equal to 0.86% of total loans and 197.1% of non-performing loans.

Nine-month net income fell $0.7 million, or about 8.1%, to $8.0 million. Nine-month OPPNR rose $0.6 million, or about 4.0%, to $15.4 million. That gap suggests core earnings held up better than reported profit. But the stronger margin came with a smaller loan book, lower deposits and higher non-accrual loans. Stockholders' equity was $184.2 million after $9.3 million of repurchases during the period, which matters for per-share value.

What's next

The next quarterly report will show whether margins, loan balances and non-accrual loans keep moving the same way. A stronger update would show the 4.46% net interest margin holding up while deposits and credit quality stabilize. A weaker one would show more shrinkage without more per-share gains.
