What Must Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ: META) Prove in Q3?

What happened

Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ: META) will report third-quarter results after the October 21 market close. To reach the midpoint of its own revenue guide, the company must deliver about $62.5 billion, 2.8% more than the second quarter.

That is the immediate test. The full $61 billion to $64 billion range implies sequential growth from just 0.3% at the low end to 5.3% at the high end. A result near the midpoint would keep the core advertising engine moving forward, but revenue alone will not answer the larger investment question.

Why it matters

Second-quarter revenue for Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ: META) grew 28% from a year earlier, supported by a 14% increase in ad impressions and a 12% increase in average price per ad. Yet costs and expenses rose 55%, operating income fell 8% and operating margin narrowed to 31% from 43%.

Part of that drop came from $2.40 billion of legal charges and $1.18 billion of severance. Those items make the headline margin comparison noisy. The October report therefore needs to show whether underlying cost growth improved after the charges, without relying on an invented adjusted measure.

Cash generation is the other constraint. The company produced $31.86 billion of operating cash flow in the second quarter, while capital expenditures including finance-lease principal reached $31.08 billion. Free cash flow was only $784 million. The company expects $130 billion to $145 billion of capital expenditures for 2026. The third-quarter report therefore needs to pair durable ad growth with better cash conversion.

The strongest counterargument is that the core business remains powerful. Daily active people increased 3%, advertising volumes and pricing both rose, and the company ended June with $90.26 billion of cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities. The disclosed charges also made reported margin look weaker than the operating run rate.

What's next

The next evidence is third-quarter revenue relative to the $62.5 billion midpoint, operating margin after the second-quarter charges, capital expenditures, free cash flow and fourth-quarter guidance. Those numbers will show whether Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ: META) is turning AI spending into operating leverage or simply funding growth at a higher cost.

A revenue beat would help, but the investment case needs both growth and improving cash conversion. Until the report arrives, the calculations define the hurdle rather than predict the result.
