SFL (NYSE: SFL) agrees ammonia carrier deal, adds $162 million backlog

What happened

SFL Corporation Ltd. (NYSE: SFL) said October 5, 2026, that it agreed to build two 93,000 cbm Very Large Ammonia Carriers. The vessels will have dual-fuel propulsion and technology for fuel efficiency and cargo intake optimization. They will also be able to carry a wide range of petrochemical gases.

Delivery is scheduled from the second quarter of 2028, and the aggregate yard construction cost is expected to be approximately $216 million. At the same time, SFL agreed to long term time charters to an oil major, adding a minimum of approximately $162 million to fixed rate charter backlog.

Including acquisitions and charter extensions announced so far this year, SFL said it has added more than $1.3 billion to its fixed rate charter backlog in 2026. SFL also said the charterer is a European based investment grade oil major.

Why it matters

OptimistFi's case is that SFL's equity works if contracted charters keep producing cash through cycles and management redeploys capital into profitable tonnage. This filing fits that view. It adds a new segment and more fixed rate charter backlog. The release says the gas carrier project adds assets in a new segment. It also links those assets to a long term charter with an oil major.

The minimum backlog addition of approximately $162 million is smaller than the approximately $216 million yard cost. The initial charter period will be determined within the next six months, so the final economics can still change before the deal is fully set. The charterer can also extend the time charters by up to 4 years. That gives more visibility on cash generation, but charter length still matters.

What's next

The initial charter period will be determined within the next six months, and SFL said backlog may increase then. A longer initial period or full use of the extension options would support the case for contracted cash generation. If the initial term is shorter, the backlog lift would be smaller.

Delivery from the second quarter of 2028 is the other dated milestone in the release. If that schedule holds and the charters are extended, the filing points to another contracted addition to SFL's fleet. If the initial term stays short, the backlog lift would be smaller.
