Orchestra BioMed (NASDAQ: OBIO) clears BACKBEAT target with Medtronic study

What happened

Orchestra BioMed Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: OBIO) said 330 patients were randomized in the BACKBEAT Global Pivotal Trial as of September 30, 2026. That is above the company's previously announced target of 316 randomized patients. The trial is evaluating AVIM Therapy in pacemaker-indicated patients with uncontrolled hypertension despite medication. It is being conducted with Medtronic plc, the strategic collaborator for the trial and, subject to regulatory approval, for commercialization of AVIM Therapy in that setting.

The BACKBEAT Trial is global, multi-center, prospective, randomized and double-blind. Patients are randomized 1:1 to AVIM Therapy plus continued medical therapy and pacing or to continued medical therapy and standard pacing alone. The filing says the trial is running at 81 sites across 13 countries.

Why it matters

OptimistFi's case is that partner support can turn clinical programs into milestones and eventual royalties. This filing strengthens that view because the Medtronic-backed BACKBEAT study reached full enrollment. The filing says the protocol specifies 284 evaluable randomized subjects for the primary endpoint analysis. It also says total enrollment was set at 316 patients to account for possible loss to follow-up.

The design is built to detect a between-group difference of at least 5 mmHg in 24-hour ambulatory systolic blood pressure. It has greater than 90% statistical power for both primary endpoints. The 330-patient count gives investors a clear enrollment marker ahead of the readout.

What's next

Orchestra BioMed and Medtronic intend to submit the primary endpoint results for consideration as a late-breaking clinical trial presentation at a major cardiovascular conference in Q2 2027. The company says those data are expected to support future marketing application submissions by Medtronic to the FDA and other global regulatory agencies.

Orchestra BioMed said it is now focused on completing three-month follow-up, database lock and delivery of a rigorous, well-powered data set next spring. Positive endpoint data would support the regulatory path the filing outlines. The Q2 2027 presentation consideration is the next dated step named in the filing.
