NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) Expands Buyback to $235 Billion

What happened

NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) expanded its remaining share-repurchase authorization to $235 billion on Monday.

The board added $150 billion and expects the program to run through fiscal 2028. That figure is authority to purchase, not cash already spent or a guaranteed schedule.

The latest filing says NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) can change execution with market conditions, operating needs and other investment opportunities. That flexibility matters because the headline amount is much larger than the company's current cash pool.

Why it matters

NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) held $56.586 billion of cash, cash equivalents and marketable debt securities on July 26. It also held $42.8 billion of marketable equity securities.

Together, those liquid assets totaled $99.386 billion. The $235 billion authorization is 2.36 times that amount, so execution depends on continued cash generation rather than today's balance sheet alone.

Cash generation is strong. NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) produced $74.421 billion of operating cash flow in the first half and repurchased 203 million shares for $39.845 billion. Buybacks used 53.5% of operating cash flow.

The share count shows the practical result. After stock issuance, tax withholding and repurchases, outstanding shares fell by 157 million, or 0.65%, from January 25 to July 26. Authorization only creates per-share value when purchases outpace issuance at sensible prices.

NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) also disclosed $366 billion of future commitments, including $279 billion for supply and capacity. These commitments span several years and are not all immediate payments. Still, the comparison reveals the central tradeoff between historic shareholder returns and the AI investment needed to protect growth.

What's next

Watch quarterly repurchase spending, the net share count, operating cash flow and disclosed commitments through fiscal 2028. Those figures will show whether the authorization becomes durable per-share growth or remains mostly unused capacity.

If cash generation keeps rising while NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) funds product and supply commitments, the capital-allocation case strengthens. If growth slows or commitments climb faster, buybacks may compete with the investments supporting the valuation.

The next quarterly filing should provide the first execution evidence after this authorization. This is source-backed research, not personalized investment advice.
