What happened
Main Street Capital Corporation (NYSE: MAIN) said preliminary third-quarter net investment income will be $0.87 to $0.91 per share. Preliminary distributable net investment income is $0.94 to $0.98 per share, and DNII before taxes is $0.96 to $1.00 per share.
Main Street estimated net asset value per share at $34.18 to $34.26 as of September 30, 2026, up from $33.92 on June 30, 2026. The company said the increase came mainly from net fair value appreciation on the investment portfolio and accretive equity issuances. Dividends above net investment income and the net tax provision partly offset that gain.
During the quarter, Main Street Mezzanine Fund, LP got SBA approval to raise SBIC debenture borrowing capacity by $75.0 million to $250.0 million. With Main Street Capital III, LP, Main Street said it has access to $425.0 million of the recently increased $475.0 million regulatory maximum for affiliated SBIC funds.
Main Street also estimated annualized return on equity at over 14% for the third quarter. Investments on non-accrual status were 0.9% of the total investment portfolio at fair value and 3.5% at cost as of September 30, 2026.

Why it matters
OptimistFi's case is that MAIN can create value if its lower-middle-market debt-and-equity niche keeps compounding book equity per share through credit cycles. This filing supports that view with another quarter of estimated NAV growth and more SBIC borrowing room.
At about 89.5% of the $475.0 million regulatory maximum, the $425.0 million access figure shows the company still has room under the program. That matters because the program can support more lending and equity investments without changing the niche the filing describes.
The filing is preliminary, and quarter-end closing and third-party review could change the reported figures materially.

What's next
Main Street will release third-quarter 2026 results on Thursday, November 5, 2026, after the financial markets close. It will hold a conference call on Friday, November 6, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Eastern time.
Results that hold the preliminary NII and NAV ranges would support this view, while a lower final print would weaken it. Those results are the next scheduled check on the quarter.
